Don't mothball those walking boots yet. In Tops of the North Graham Wilson takes you on his 1100km circular walk based on the county tops (old and new) of northern England. In Volume 1 he tackles the western reaches, starting at Three Shire Head (where Cheshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire meet) and finishing at Carlisle. His high-level route takes in (among others) Kinder Scout, Black Hill, Pendle Hill, Arnside Knot and the Old Man of Coniston, culminating in a continuous traverse of the Lakes Threethousanders. In between, he travels across the South Lancs moors, the Forest of Bowland, Leighton Moss nature reserve, Morecambe Bay, Arthur Ransome country and a variety of national parks. Encounters (brief or otherwise) include Pendle witches, Rossendale bonesetters, Lakeland smugglers, a Victorian pepperpot, and much more-plus, of course, the odd inn or two.
AUTHOR
Graham Wilson was born in the north west but raised in the north east, read Law at university but chose to teach English, is a lifelong Sunderland supporter but was for many years an English Schools rugby selector. A mountain, literature and ale enthusiast, he has lived in Macclesfield, where he was Head of English at the King's School, for nearly 40 years.
REVIEWS
Andy Howell, the Outdoors Station
Here is a corker for all of you who like your walking and mountain books a little on the eccentric side! It is an interesting route. But, this is no guide book. With a pile of OS maps you can easily recreate the route, and there is a fair amount of route finding information here. But this is more a book of experience, a new telling of the history of the hills and a lot more besides. It is a very funny book as well as being incredibly informative. Many of your favourite north England routes will never quite seem the same again.
Country Walking
Tops of the North is a fabulous, meandering circuit of the north of England's county high points, taking a roundabout route over current and historic county tops in a daunting trail that would stretch to about 1,000km
