This is the second and final leg of Graham Wilson's 1,100km high-level walk linking County Tops (old and new) of northern England. From Carlisle to The Cheviot and the Northumberland coast, from the Durham moors to the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District, his entertainingly roundabout route finally returns to the moorland near Buxton where it began. On the way he takes in Hadrian's Wall and Northumbrian castles, saintly Ways and long distance footpaths, knitting miners and the Geordie language, Ted Hughes and the Venerable Bede, bogs, plagues and George I - and much more.
AUTHOR
Graham Wilson was born in the north west but raised in the north east, read Law at university but chose to teach English, is a lifelong Sunderland supporter but was for many years an English Schools rugby selector. A mountain, literature and ale enthusiast, he has lived in Macclesfield, where he was Head of English at the King's School, for nearly 40 years.
REVIEWS
TGO
If you like sifting through a landscape's history and enjoy an individual sense of humour, this book should be on your hit list. This volume can be appreciated alone, but for completeness I'd couple it with volume 1, which follows a similarly insightful and entertaining style.
Country Walking
This book from the splendid Millrace stable sees Graham Wilson complete his 1100km quest to conquer the county summits of northern England. He fills his journey with fascinating facts and figures.
