Lochs & Glens South

Route 78

There are lochs and glens, plus miles of coast and forest on this route north from Carlisle. It takes you along the beautiful Solway coast, over the hills of the Galloway forest, and to the beaches of Ayrshire, before heading into Glasgow. The route offers something for everyone with a variety of easy and challenging cycling, both on and off road. In the southern section, especially there is an extensive network of quiet minor roads linking the National Route.

Most of the route through Dumfries and Galloway follows minor roads through farmland, past sweeping coastlines, ruined castles and picturesque towns. Many first time visitors to Scotland head for the Highlands but, once discovered, the south west corner is a place you'll want to come back to again and again.

There's an easy-going pace, wide beaches, big skies, beautiful countryside and - great news for cyclists - quiet roads and many small towns and villages along the way offering accommodation and refreshment. The new national route 73 (south) from Newton Stewart to Stranraer will encourage you to explore the peaceful areas to the west. If you want more of a challenge, try the 24-mile off road alternative route to Glen Trool via Clatteringshaws Loch.

Once you enter the Galloway forest Park north of Newton Stewart, the land becomes wilder and more remote. Its great cycling country, with some steep climbs and great swoops down. In contrast, the route along the Ayrshire coast offers easy cycling past sandy beaches and golf courses, with excellent views of Arran. The final stage of the journey from Lochwinnoch is suprisingly cycle-friendly as it follows cycle tracks and quiet roads throughJohnstone and Paisley into the centre of Glasgow, Scotland's largest and most vibrant city.
