Hiroshima Nagasaki

An illustrated history, anthology and guide

£16.95

As the 70th anniversary of their destruction passes, the story is told of the uniquely twinned cities of Horishima and Nagasaki using literary extracts from Socrates, Murasaki Shikibu, Commodore Perry, D. T. Suzuki, Josef Stalin, Winston Churchill, Shusaku Endo and many more.

The book reveals uses rarely seen photographs and documents to tell the full story of what led up to the bombings, in the hope it will spark discussion and debate about nuclear weapons and their place in the modern world. The cities are also portrayed as they are today, showing the resilience of their citizens by rebuilding after total destruction. This unique and eclectic study takes the reader through seven centuries of Japanese history, showing the significance of the two cities and their environs. Using rarely seen photographs and a wide range of extracts from literature, art and film, it details the events leading up to and after the bombings and also provides invaluable travel information for the modern-day visitor who plans making a pilgrimage to the cities. 150 colour and black & white illustrations.
